YOUR SLIP IS SHOWING

Pin It Now!

Though I’m one to think that black and white is ‘just too easy’, and I’m more naturally prone to taking ‘hard-way-out’, I can’t help but gravitate to monochrome every time. It’s just like when I was pursuing the illustrator-to-be path, and pencil on white paper was always my favourite medium. I loved constructing forms and textures in monochrome. On the other hand, colour always baffled me; seemed unnecessary, even. As envious as I was of people who could so effortlessly bend colour to their will, I guess I’ll forever be stumbling over it like a pair of beautiful but impossibly impractical shoes.

Always the girl on a quest, I spent much of last year embracing my fear of colourful clothes. By the end of it I found myself with a bamboozling wardrobe that left me mentally and sartorially scattered. I’ve come to think that it’s time to accept I’m more suited to the black and white silent film era. Coincidentally, impractical shoes is another impediment in my life I’ve rather decided to live without.

And as for today’s outfit, I just wanted to point out that I purchased a slip dress from ASOS only with the single intention of wearing it as a skirt under a white T shirt. Mission accomplished.

CAMO AND TAPERED

Pin It Now!

Tapered. That’s a catch word that can get me to part with my money in two seconds flat. But only because it’s so hard to find a great pair of tapered pants of the right fit and length. I guess I just love things to be tied off nicely, even pant legs. Besides, I’m still planning to be Lara Croft when I grow up, so you want to feel like you’re ready for anything, like if you suddenly had to be chased down a trendy cafe strip by goons in your Louboutins.

In other news, browsing the discount vintage racks at antique shops has been paying dividends lately. At Canberra’s Down Memory Lane (located literally down a, well, lane) last week, I found a bunch of gorgeous vintage washed silk T shirts for just $10 each, complete with their respective epic 80’s power shoulder pads, which I seriously considered leaving in. Of course, the first thing I did was to rub lippy all over the collar. This is why I can’t have nice things.

FESTIVE SHORTS

When summer comes around and it’s so hot your makeup melts away in the sun, there’s nothing for it but to slip on your mini shorts and oversized sunnies and just embrace the inelegance of it all. I love the atmosphere of spontaneity and playful nonchalance that’s so unique to summer. For the same reason I’m completely enamored of the multi-candy-coloured prints from Australian brand Pemba Boutique which embodies these sentiments so well: Bright red chilies in white negative space, long tangerine zigzags, painterly fruit medley on a violate platter; need I say more? Today’s outfit features Pemba’s Pine Ale Shorts in Turquoise Ikat print – so playful and cool that it beckons one to take a rainbow mocktail in hand. Being the massive cliché that I am, my choice of shoe is of course a pair of simple ankle strap sandals.

If Pemba Boutique’s pieces remind you of the contents of a suitcase that’s just been around the world, well, that’s because owners Pip and Nancy are global travelers. From Africa to Asia, they came, they saw, they danced, and then they came home and opened up shop. As someone on the verge of contracting the travel bug, I can’t help but feel that just-off-the-plane euphoria when browsing through their many easy-to-wear separates and onesies. Each piece looks like it came fresh from a beach-front bazaar somewhere.

School Uniform Envy

Pin It Now!
IMG_8517

I wasn’t one of those people who hated wearing my school uniform. I loved my green tartan skirt and white button up shirt so much that they continued to be integrated into my everyday wardrobe even after I graduated. But I always wished that long socks, bow ties and blazers were a part of my public school uniform – major uniform envy for the posh private schools. I wonder whether it’s because of the nostalgia of high school life or the objective chic-ness of the design of uniforms, that elements of school dress consistently make their way back into mainstream trends. The varsity jacket, which is traditionally a symbol of athletic achievement that had to be earned, just happens to be a fierce outerwear item and by many accounts a ‘must-have’, being perfectly aligned to a number of current popular trends (namely, leather, boyfriend and oversized). I’ve just always love the look and feel of the varsity jacket. The more oversized the better.

What’s trending now: The ankle strap heel

I don’t know if they’ve been able to explain this scientifically yet, but ankles are, let’s face it, totally sexy. For centuries, women have worn decorations around their ankles, and this one is no exception. The ankle strap heel is so simple a concept, but something about this extra touch on a pair of pumps exudes elegance, sexy appeal, and oldschool uptown chic. Whether super thin or chunky thick, buckled or Velcro, we’ll be seeing a lot of the ankle strap this season.

For those of us who have been cosying up in boots over the colder seasons, we could only watch with envy as the ankle strap heel was worn, in all colours, shapes and sizes, on the other side of the world. Now the tables have turned. There are so many great ankle strap styles at Macy’s right now. Here are some of my picks.

Marc Fisher Kiley pump

The D'Orsay heel (a pump with both sides cut out) was practically born for the ankle strap. I love this two tone pump by Marc Fisher, which reminds me of the cult Zara perfect sandal, except with covered toes.
