I don’t know if they’ve been able to explain this scientifically yet, but ankles are, let’s face it, totally sexy. For centuries, women have worn decorations around their ankles, and this one is no exception. The ankle strap heel is so simple a concept, but something about this extra touch on a pair of pumps exudes elegance, sexy appeal, and oldschool uptown chic. Whether super thin or chunky thick, buckled or Velcro, we’ll be seeing a lot of the ankle strap this season.
For those of us who have been cosying up in boots over the colder seasons, we could only watch with envy as the ankle strap heel was worn, in all colours, shapes and sizes, on the other side of the world. Now the tables have turned. There are so many great ankle strap styles at Macy’s right now. Here are some of my picks.
The D'Orsay heel (a pump with both sides cut out) was practically born for the ankle strap. I love this two tone pump by Marc Fisher, which reminds me of the cult Zara perfect sandal, except with covered toes.
What’s better than an ankle strap? Two of course! The double straps on these L.A.M.B Oxley pumps emphasise the ankles, and the short toe creates ooh la la toe cleavage.
Steve Madden’s Obstcl-s Pumps combine the ankle strap trend with my other favourite trends right now: spikes, spikes, spikes! These pumps are a great example of how spikes and studs have well and truly transcended the 90’s grunge look, and can be modern and chic as well.
Michael Kors is such a pro when it comes to combining simple elegance with high drama. The super thick ankle strap blurs the lines between shoe and boot, and I love the oversized buckles, which gives this shoe a bondage flavour.
Wedges are also getting the ankle strap upgrade with L.A.M.B’s Havana wedge. This shoe is all about the subtle details with split wedge and white edging detail. The look is feminine, whimsical, and quietly fierce.
Finally, for a preppy school girl look, check out these sweet but rebellious platform wedges by Chinese Laundry. The conventional round toe juxtaposed with the sky high platform conjures images of Harajuku’s Takeshita Lane.
Will you be rocking the ankle strap heel this season?
