Apart from being an established local fashion designer, she was a prolific Canberra blogger many years before I even knew what blogging was, she's an artist and a musician, and she's a reoccurring face in the local social pages. She's also one of the first local designers I ever had the pleasure of befriending when I first came to Canberra.

Her label, SZN is a mix of minimalism and experimentation. Her pieces could be described a enigmatic, always leaving you wondering: what are they made of, and how did she come up with this? Suzan, being a sustainable designer, names the fabric itself as one of her main inspirations. Her materials are largely salvaged scraps from other design processes. Most of the times they come in inconvenient shapes or small scraps, and the challenge of working with these gives rise to innovation. Suzan’s finished products are always conceptual and often take on a sculptural quality.

While SZN is on the Avant-garde side of designers showing at FASHFEST, there's always a dress or a separate that just beckons street styling. Everyone wanted the 'Sarah' dress after Suzan showed at last year's FASHFEST - a mod inspired tunic dress made in Suzan's signature monochrome palette. It was renamed the 'Sarah' after Sarah Kelly, the first woman in Canberra to get her hands on one.

I’m wearing Suzan's hand tied net dress, made by meticulously tying elastane off-cuts. The construction brings to mind chain mail, fish netting and, inevitably, mermaids - not so much of a jump, surely. It's that incredible texture that I loved so much when it walked down the catwalk at last year's FASHFEST, worn by Mimi Fairall. Needless to say I was tickled pink to be able to photograph it myself. I thought, given Suzan’s 2013 collection was what inspired me to buy myself a wide brimmed black fedora, it would only be right that I wore it with her amazing dress.

The gorgeous photography also deserve a mention - taken by my talented blogger bestie Heather (Heatstorm Blog).

SZN will be showing at this year's FASHFEST, Canberra's biggest annual fashion event held over four nights from 30 April to 3 May 2014 with different designers every night! I was head to toe in Staple the Label for this shoot - isn't it obvious from the copious mesh insertions and the feminine-masculine lines? I remember back in 2010 I first came across her photography website Yowa Yowa Camera Diary, and I was hooked immediately. Every post was entitled 'Today's Levitation', with stunning photos of Japanese girls ostensibly levitating while doing everyday things: vacuuming the floor, talking on the phone, getting on a train, crossing the street. I would strongly argue that Natsumi's photos sparked the whole levitation photography craze. Recently, Natsumi announced her first solo exhibition in Tokyo. Let me answer this with this question - how many style bloggers have you met who aren't in dept? (#jokingnotjoking) Apart from supplementing our wardrobes with 'sponsorship' from brands, most of us bloggers get by, by heavily mixing high-end, low-end, and thrift buys. Every style blogger's got their sights set on a Givenchy Antigona, a collection of Josh Goot dresses and as many pairs of red soled Christian Louboutin's as monetarily possible. One can't go without the other. If you're gonna get all dressed up in florals, that flower had better the the size of a baby elephant. That's edge you can't fake. A statement skirt is, in my book, one of the most easiest pieces to style. Once you have that large scale floral on your hips, you almost can't go wrong. In the world of ecommerce, photographing apparel laid flat on a white background just made it easier to create product images without having to bring models of mannequins involved. For fashion mags and bloggers, it’s an indispensible tool for creating fashion edits and style sets in flatlay form. Using existing flatlay images from e-tailers to create collages via websites like Polyvore is all well and good, but the best flatlays are created ‘in real life’.

As part of Westfield’s Flatlay the Nation competition, with $500 given away every day, Westfield Belconnen invited me and fellow Canberra fashion bloggers Heatstorm Blog and Style H2T to the Westfield mall for a fashion blogger’s Flatlay-Off (coin-worthy?). My lack of appreciation for skirts, heels and brushing my hair back in my school days also made me the butt of similar jokes. However, try as I may, I could never become the girly girl that, as a kid, I thought was the standard for a girl. But pure femininity is not for everyone, after all, and to this day, nothing’s more comfortable for me than wearing what the boys wear. Slouchy shirts, wrecked jeans and stuff that’s so shapeless that they make all your lovely lady lumps disappear. It’s just like when I was pursuing the illustrator-to-be path, and pencil on white paper was always my favourite medium. I loved constructing forms and textures in monochrome. On the other hand, colour always baffled me; seemed unnecessary, even. As envious as I was of people who could so effortlessly bend colour to their will, I guess I’ll forever be stumbling over it like a pair of beautiful but impossibly impractical shoes.

Always the girl on a quest, I spent much of last year embracing my fear of colourful clothes. By the end of it I found myself with a bamboozling wardrobe that left me mentally and sartorially scattered. I’ve come to think that it’s time to accept I’m more suited to the black and white silent film era. Coincidentally, impractical shoes is another impediment in my life I’ve rather decided to live without.

And as for today’s outfit, I just wanted to point out that I purchased a slip dress from ASOS only with the single intention of wearing it as a skirt under a white T shirt.

In 1986, Belinda Riding was just a Canberra Girls Grammar student when she was discovered as a model by choreographer Ken Moncrief. Her international modeling career taking off from there, she moved to beautiful Paris and went on to grace the cover of French Elle, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, German Vogue and Grazia, just to name a few. Throughout her highly successful career, she worked with the world’s premier designers, including Chanel, Hermes, Comme des Garcons and Missoni.

Why am I telling you all this? Well, it was officially announced today that Belinda Riding has been anointed Face of Fashfest 2014 (taking over from Anneliese Seubert). As the Face of Fashfest, we will see Belinda representing this four day event in the lead up, and we might also expect that she will walk down the runway in key looks from this year’s collections (I’m still having flashbacks of Anneliese in that unforgettable blue and gold Rockstars and Royalty number last year!).

‘It’s an honour to participate in Fashfest,’ says Belinda. ‘Designers and models need a serious and professional platform like this to showcase their work, gain experience and flourish in the industry. That’s why it’s fantastic that
Canberra now has Fashfest. It’s the biggest fashion event held here—our own version of Sydney Fashion Week, Melbourne Fashion Festival and Brisbane Fashion Festival.’

Fashfest 2014 will be held at the Canberra airport on 30 April to 3 May. This year will be even bigger and better than its inaugural year—more ticket sales; pre-assigned seating; new designers on board; fabulous musicians and DJs; VIP guests from here and interstate; retails scouting for labels to stock; and more.

Tickets will be on sale soon. And if it’s anything like last year, you’ll have to get in quick because they sell out fast!
You’d be surprised how few pieces you need to build a complete office wardrobe that you can mix and match for countless outfits so that you’ll hardly ever be see in the same outfit twice! I recommend getting the one black suit that you’ll need for the most formal occasions. Your second suit can be more fun. A black and white print is fashion forward but is still conservative enough for any office.
At least two dresses: It’s always wise to have a minimal black shift dress for the office. Get a sleeveless style that layers easily with your tops to change up the look. Not all your dresses have to be prim and proper. Fit and flare styles are perfectly appropriate for the office, in my opinion (very Audrey Hepburn, no?).
At lease one dress shirt: You’ll need this to go with your serious black suit, but the button down shirt is so chic and versatile that it will go with everything.
Chic tops: You should arm yourself with lots of top choices. It really doesn’t matter what the top is, as long as it doesn’t show too much skin – tailored tee’s, lace singlets, tank tops, all these are great. Tops is also your chance to add a pop of colour to your outfits, so embrace the rainbow! I’ve chosen the classic peplum tank and a simple jumper.
The cardigan: For days you don’t want to wear a blazer, a simple black cardigan makes almost anything look smart.
Statement necklaces: Just because you’re at work doesn’t mean you should neglect to accessorize! Statement necklaces contrast beautiful with minimalist outfits. Have at least two and try to consider the colour scheme of your wardrobe when choosing them. I’ve gone with a blue, pink and black theme below, so it makes sense to get a blue and pink necklace.
The belt: Belts are terribly chic for the office, and it’s always good to cinch in to make things look more structured. Trust me, get yourself at least one.
The pump and the flat: It goes without saying that everyone needs a pair of simple black pumps for the office, but don’t forget your classic ballet flat. Some days you might not want to wear heels, and a black ballet flat is always work appropriate.

And now, our outfit possibilities!

Make your work wardrobe last for years to come by being creative with layering.
