Absolutely Fabulous 90’s

Pin It Now!

Time heals all wounds? It’s true at least, it seems, in fashion. Immediately as it passed and we took the first look back to the 90’s, we cringed in embarrassment at an era defined by its lack of (revolt against) style. But every time we look back again, the blow seems to soften. For me the 90’s represented a terrible train crash in fashion history, and that train was carrying car loads of wardrobe from the set of 90210. But there are so many elements from that era I actually love, like the gaudy bomber jackets, oversized chains and overly tight mini skirts. I don’t believe that we revisit retro styles because we’re running out of ideas. Rather, it’s like remaking old movies with modern day special effects. The ideas were good, but just executed badly. However, I can’t help but wonder what we’ll think of our reinterpretations of retro fashion when we come to reinterpret the reinterpretation in the next 10 years.

End of week look: The tank and the dress

Pin It Now! IMG_4051
I’m some what obsessed with these big cat printed frayed tanks that a vendor sells at the Canberra Fash’n’Treasure. Though I get the feeling you could make one easily yourself, I still like the idea that someone else scouted out the shirt, cut it by hand, and that each one is one of a kind.

Pleated Midi dress

Pin It Now! IMG_2194IMG_2217IMG_2215IMG_2203
I wore: Biker Jacket – T by Bettina Liano • Pleated midi dress – C&A • Jeffery Campbell Spiked Lita –www.revolveclothing.com

I think a great basic item should be 1) amazing looking on its own 2) colour and style neutral so it goes with everything, and 3) never lets you down when you don’t know what to wear. That’s why I totally love this simple maxi dress from chain store C&A in China. I love that it’s got a really flattering high waisted and draped design and that it’s easy to pair with just about anything. I’ve ween wearing it with my grungy biker jacket and colourful sweaters pulled over the top. A change of shoes also completely changes the overall look. You know you’re onto a winner when it’s the first thing you reach for every morning.
Do you have a basic item that you reach for every time?
