Sustainable Threads, to be held this Thursday, is the next big fashion event to hit Canberra this year, but this will not just be a fashion parade to showcase amazing local designers (or to drink champagne and hobnob). It will be a show to reflect an important movement in fashion, the incorporation of the concept of environmental sustainability in fashion design.
Tonight I was invited to take a secret look at what is to be expected at Sustainable Threads’ rehearsal. Read on to find out more!
This Thursday, the Belconnen Arts Centre will be transformed for the fashion parade, with never before seen projections on the lake to compliment the show. This is an event not to be missed!
FASHFEST designers Suzan Dlouhy (SZN), Alice Sutton (EDITION), Stephanie Cooper (APERIODIC), Jade Sargent (SOVATA) and Kelli Donovan (Pure Pod) have created a number of new looks to be shown exclusively at Sustainable Threads. Shauna Hagan (Lost) and CIT student Holly Squair are brand new on the scene, and I had the opportunity to get a sneak peek of their unique collections at tonight’s rehearsal. In particular, Shauna’s collection consists of ‘up-cycled’ vintage clothing, making extensive use of grungy denim and flannel. I literally wanted every single piece.
Each designer is passionate about creating garments that are both fashion forward and fit within an ethical and environmentally friendly lifestyle. Their use of techniques such as zero waste pattern-making and incorporation of pre-consumer waste opens up opportunities for new innovations in design. I can’t wait for you guys to see it!
Sustainable Threads is on this Thursday 6 June 2013 at the Belconnen Arts Centre from 6 pm to 8 pm. The after party will be held at La de Da.
Tickets are $25 adult and $20 concession. Book here or purchase tickets at the door before 6:30pm!
Sustainable Threads is organized by Common Ground Exhibitions & Research.
