I’ve always have a soft spot for Penny from the Big Bang Theory and the relentless jokes about her lack of femininity (though the irony couldn’t be more effective, seeing as she was cast as the unattainable object of desire throughout the early seasons). My lack of appreciation for skirts, heels and brushing my hair back in my school days also made me the butt of similar jokes. However, try as I may, I could never become the girly girl that, as a kid, I thought was the standard for a girl. But pure femininity is not for everyone, after all, and to this day, nothing’s more comfortable for me than wearing what the boys wear. Slouchy shirts, wrecked jeans and stuff that’s so shapeless that they make all your lovely lady lumps disappear. Of course, I do throw in a particular shade of pink and a random flower bouquet when the mood suits. And note: the lacy camisole. Weekends are for brunches, and recently I’ve been rediscovering Canberra’s Kingston area. I hear that too adorable for words Penny University was opened by a couple of Canberran university students who were just like ‘f*** it’, and bought a cafe. You must try the Croissant French Toast, you’ll be in heaven.

I know what this must look like. You’re thinking, it was fine when she was going on endlessly about boyfriend jeans, but now she’s gone too far. To say these jeans are a ‘slouchy fit’ would probably be a bit of an understatement. My best way of describing the cut is ‘Zoo Suit’ – high waisted, super baggy and dramatically tapered at the ankle. Curiously, rather than buying an ill fitting pair of pants which I make work with (perhaps questionable) belting and rolling, these jeans were evidently designed this way. A thrift find, of course. The label features delightful illustrations of men in bowling shirts and white sneakers, perhaps a serving suggestion. It made me wonder to what demographic and/or era this silhouette is supposed to appeal to, but at the same time I couldn’t help but be be completely appealed. The minute I saw these I was like, ‘will look so good with heels’. I wonder if you agree with me, or is this another one of my poor, stepping-over-the-masculinity-line, style choices to be regretted this time next year? I won’t deny it. I’m a shameless leg-barer – always have been. Even back in high school I used to wear tiny shorts every single day, even if my butt cheek showed, and I had 10 pairs of them. But it wasn’t because I thought I had great legs. On the contrary. I’ve always hated how ‘athletic’ they look. People would always ask me if I was in a basketball team or something. The irony was that I’ve never run a full mile in my life. I’m pretty sure the last time I tried I threw up at the 100 meters mark. Ok, I exaggerate for effect, but I think you get my point. No, it wasn’t about showing them off, or even because I liked to see them myself (heck no!). It just feels great, no? So liberating. You feel like you could get up and do kart wheels if you wanted to. And trust me, the urge does inevitably hit once in a while. The short short is still among one of my favourite things to wear, but these days I opt for the non-butt-cheek-baring styles. That’s why I love these perfect Jorge lace trim shorts. They are decidedly short but cover up all the places that need covering including the notorious fat part of the thigh. Wearing sleeveless tops with short shorts is way too obvious in my books, so on this warm spring day I paired these with a breezy silk blouse. These days I love everything in slouchy fits. I guess it’s like leaving the figure to the imagination, like, does she have any boobs, or not? Keep them guessing! Living life could be boiled down to a never ending quest for that elusive balance between variables and forces – fast and slow, greed and generosity, pride and humility… In our materialistic modern society, it seems we have a new balance to strike, one between being trendy and a fashion victim. It’s the fine art of being the first to jump onto the current fad then rejecting those fads immediately as it becomes recognized as mainstream. Personally, I am completely resigned to being in the fashion victim extreme. Show me any credible evidence that something is in vogue and I’ll go out and buy 10 of them. Printed pants? I’m up to my sixth pair.
